Biographical History
Born Clear Lake, Wisc. Ordained as Roman Catholic priest 1949 after leaving the Episcopalian priesthood. Conscientious objector status during World War II. Associate pastor St. Mary's Cathedral, Fargo, N.D. and teacher at Shanley High School, Fargo, 1949-1954. Parish priest at Berlin, N.D. until 1959, then instructor of theology at Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; 1963-1965, chaplain at Newman Center, North Dakota State University, published author of books and pamphlets, 1963 appointed editor to Liturgy magazine. Active in groups sponsoring social justice such as American Civil Liberties Union, National Association for Advancement of Colored People, Congress of Racial Equality, and various organizations concerned with conscientious objectors. 1978, lecturer at Jesuit School of Theology, Chicago. Retired 1985 in New York City, died there 1992.
