Biographical History
John Leonard Riddell, physician, biologist, and inventor, was born in Leyden, Mass., Feb. 20, 1807. In 1835 he was appointed professor of chemistry and botany at Cincinnati Medical College, and published his "Synopsis of the Flora of the Western States". He received an M.D. degree in 1836 from Cincinnati Medical College. He then went to New Orleans as professor of chemistry in the Medical College of Louisiana, where he worked throughout the rest of his life. In New Orleans he also became melter and refiner at the Mint, a member of the River Control Commission, and a member of the Board of Inquiry into causes of yellow fever.
Physician and botanist of Louisiana.
John Leonard Riddell and Josiah Hale were interested in the flora of Louisiana. Riddell (Cincinnati Medical College, M.D. 1835) taught chemistry at Medical College of Louisiana from 1836. Hale studied botany at Transylvania University (1820-1821); practiced medicine and after 1834, pursued his botanical interests. Riddell contributed a manuscript "Plants of Louisiana" to the Smithsonian Institution in 1851; Hale was responsible for the sections on Cyperaceae and Gramineae. After the Smithsonian declined to publish it, an abridged version appeared in the New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal (1852).
