Biographical History

Aaron and Taba(h) Naftaly came to San Francisco, after leaving Eastern Europe in the early 1850s. Their sons (Abraham, Asher, Jacob, and Morris (Moses)) toured Asia in the late 1800s with exhibits of anatomical wonders and marvels. Their show included "Edison's Animatoscope and the Man-faced Calf." In 1890, Morris Naftaly married Sarah Less, whose brother, Isadore, was prominent in the Union Labor Party of California. Morris moved his family to Oakland, and, in 1930, he became a deputy sheriff of Alameda County. Harry R., the son of Sarah and Morris Naftaly, became a diamond dealer, while his sister, Irene, married Samuel West.

From the description of Naftaly family papers and photographs, 1860-1950. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 71127421
