Biographical History
The Rock of Ages Light is a U.S. Coast Guard lighthouse on a small rock outcropping approximately 2.25 miles west of Washington Island and 3.5 miles west of Isle Royale, in Keweenaw County, Michigan. It is an active aid to navigation.
"The U.S. Coast Guard is one of the five armed forces of the United States and the only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard protects the maritime economy and the environment, defends our maritime borders, and saves those in peril." -- "About Us--Overview." United States Coast Guard. http://www.uscg.mil/top/about/overview.asp (Retrieved January 28, 2009)
The United States Coast Guard was established in the Department of the Treasury in 1915 by consolidating the Revenue Cutter Service and the Lifesaving Service. One of its functions was to maintain casualty and wreck reports on United States vessels.
Huron Island Light is a lighthouse on Lake Superior near Big Bay, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Huron Islands Lighthouse in 1975. The light station is a duplicate of the one built at the same time on nearby Granite Island. Other sister designs include Gull Rock and Marquette Harbor lighthouses. The station is 1-1/2 stories tall and built from granite, with a square light tower, 39 feet in height, integrated into the structure. The original light was an decagonal cast iron lantern with a 3rd order Fresnel lens. Today it is owned by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Eagle Harbor Light is a lighthouse near Eagle Harbor Township, Michigan on the Keweenaw Peninsula jutting from the Michigan's Upper Peninsula up into Lake Superior. This area of Michigan is often referred to as Copper Country, and sometimes as Copper Island. In 1999 the Congress of the United States transferred ownership of the Eagle Harbor Light Station to the Keweenaw County Historical Society, which operates the lighthouse as a museum. The Coast Guard continues to operate the light at the top of the tower. The Keweenaw Lower Entry lighthouse is located at the end of a breakwater on the eastern side of the entrance to the Portage River near Jacobsville, Michigan.
