Biographical History

John Ernest White was born at 2211 F Street, NW, in Washington, D.C., on 16 Feb. 1875. His father, John (born Johan), and his mother, Charlotte, came to the U.S. from Sweden and operated "John White?s Livery Stables" from the property. John Ernest White married Maria Theresa Riedl (d. 1932) in 1915 and had two children, Dorothy Marie White and John Edward White. Records show that they resided at 1921 H Street, NW, for a period of time. He worked as a chauffeur under five U.S. presidents: Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, and Roosevelt. He also provided chauffeur services for Charles Lindbergh in 1927 using the White House car. Lindbergh received the Distinguished Flying Cross from President Coolidge following the flight of the Spirit of St. Louis. White retired at age seventy-one and died on 23 Dec. 1949 and was buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Washington, DC.
