New York City poet closely associated with the second generation New York School.
American poet strongly associated with the New York School of Poets. Mayer was born in 1945 in Brooklyn, N.Y., and has resided there her entire life. Influenced by modernist writers such as Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and Laura Riding Jackson, Mayer has devoted her literary career to experimenting with language structures and poetic forms. She is the author of more than 15 collections of writings, including Studying hunger (1975), Midwinter day (1982), Sonnets (1989), and The desires of mothers to please others in letters (1994).
