Epithet: philologist
Wilhelm Heinrich Immanuel Bleek, philologist, Africanist, and librarian, was born in Berlin, Germany on March 8, 1827. He studied theology and philology at the University of Bonn (1845-1848) and the University of Berlin (1848-1849) and received his Ph.D. from the former in 1851. Between 1852-1855 Bleek made many research trips to Africa. In 1855 he was appointed interpreter to the governor of the Cape, Sir George Grey, and became curator of Grey's library. When this collection was presented to the South African Public Library, Bleek was appointed librarian. He died in Mowbray, Cape Province on August 17, 1875.
