Biographical History

The Zodiac Club was founded on 10 December 1725 by students of Cambridge University. There were twelve members initially, who were each assigned one of the signs of the Zodiac. The numbers were increased to 18 in 1728, with the new members designated the name of a planet. The first members were bachelors of the university, but later members included masters and a few fellows. The society was a social club, and held its meetings at a local tavern. It kept a library for the benefit of its members, which was maintained by a librarian.
