Incorporated in North Carolina in 1887 to acquire stocks and bonds of railroads in North Carolina and adjoining states; controlled by Richmond Terminal Company after 1888.
The Georgia Company was one of four companies formed in 1794 for the purpose of acquiring new land in the Georgia region. They were named in the Yazoo Act of January 7, 1795, which declared the right of the State of Georgia to its unappropriated territory for the protection and support of the frontiers of the state and other purposes. Each company was to pay for its grant. Purchase money for the Georgia Company was $250,000. The land was variously referred to as the Western territory, Western lands, and Yazoo lands.
