Biographical History

Rail way system privately owned by Chicago-based Commonwealth Edison and operating on 121 route miles of track with sole function of carrying coal for the electric utility company.

Operates in central Illinois. Officially organized in 1906. Known as Central Illinois Railway Company in 1905, when Illinois Midland Coal Company purchased the Pawnee Railroad. Other railroad lines added to the system (primarily in 1920s or 1930s) included Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis Railroad; Chicago, Springfield and St. Louis Railway; and Jacksonville and Havana Railroad.
