Biographical History
Margaret Stansbury Stockton was born on September 10, 1894, at Williamsport, Indiana, the daughter of Eli and Ella Fisher Stansbury. She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1912 and obtained an A.B. from Indiana University in 1917. In 1924 she obtained an A.M. degree with a major in philosophy and a minor in sociology. The subject of her thesis was "The Influence of Religion and Ethics Upon economic Theory" of which there is a copy in the collection. Mrs. Stockton married Dr. Frank Tenney Stockton in 1917. Dr. Stockton was appointed Dean of the School of Business in 1924 and they moved to Lawrence, Kansas. Two sons were born, Robert Stansbury in 1925 and Phillip Jerome in 1927. In Lawrence, Mrs. Stockton was a pioneer in community involvement and social work. In 1948 she organized the Kansas Arts and Crafts Festival which was the first of its kind in Lawrence. She died on July 8, 1966 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kansas.
