Ernest Joachim Sternglass (born 1923) came to the United States in 1938. He received a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell in 1944 and and M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied & Engineering Physics in 1951 and 1953. From 1952 to 1967, he worked at the Westinghouse Research Laboratory on nuclear instrumentation, especially fluoroscopy, and he headed the Lunar Station program there. Beginning in the early 1960s he became interested in the health risks of low-level radiation from nuclear testing and nuclear power plants. He was the co-founder and director of the Radiation and Public Health Project. He became a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and has also written on cosmology.
