Biographical History

Ebenezer N. (E.N.) Blake was born in Farmington, Maine in 1817. In 1839 he moved to North Woburn and was employed by the Moses Cummings leather company. From 1844-1856 Blake was associated with the J.B. Winn tannery, most of the time as partner. In 1856 he formed a partnership with Charles Tidd, founding the first tannery, Tidd and Blake, located on the Woburn Branch railroad at Horn Pond. After Mr. Tidd died in 1864 he took Charles Higbee of Salem, William Cherry and John S. True as partners, forming the firm of Blake Higbee & Co. which continued under that name, with various partners, until 1878 when the firm was dissolved. E. N. Blake and his son Warren N. Blake continued in the leather business under the name of E.N. Blake and Co. until 1886 when he retired. E.N. Blake passed away on March 12, 1891.
