Biographical History

Founded as King's Church in Providence in 1722. Name changed to St. John's Church in 1794. Designated as a cathedral in 1929. Continues today as both the religious center of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island and as a parish church. The stone structure which is today's Cathedral of St. John was erected in 1811 to replace the original wooden church which had served the parish from its inception.
