Biographical History
Professor of histology at Stanford (1892-1934; emeritus, 1934-1951) and one of the organizers of the Hopkins Marine Biological Station at Pacific Grove. MacFarland was in charge of Hopkins Marine Station from 1910-1913 and co-director 1915-1917.

Born 1869 in Illinois, A.B. degree from DePauw University in 1889, M.A. degree from Stanford University in 1893, Ph. D. in Zoology from the University of Wurzburg in 1896. Taught at Stanford; helped organize Hopkins Marine Biological Station at Pacific Grove, California; studied nudibranchs; served as Secretary, Vice President, and President of California Academy of Sciences. Acting Director of Academy from 1934-1938. Died on February 21, 1951.
