Biographical History
The Society of Fellows was established in 1933 as an alternative to the Ph.D. at Harvard; it used the Prize Fellowships of Trinity College, Cambridge as a model. The Society consists of seven senior members and 25 "Junior Fellows." Eight Junior Fellows are elected each year. The organization selects outstanding scholars who are no older than 25 years at the time of their election. The Fellowship consists of renewable three-year terms, a stipend, and full use of Harvard facilities. This allows the Junior Fellow to engage in any type of approved writing or research without the burden of teaching or performing prescribed studies.
