Biographical History
Arthur Foley Winnington-Ingram was born in 1858 at Stanford-on-Teme, Worcestershire. He was educated at Marlborough College and Keble College, Oxford, and on graduating in 1881, travelled for three years as a private tutor. In 1884, he was ordained deacon and priest, and the following year was appointed domestic chaplain to the bishop of Lichfield. In 1888, he was selected as head of Oxford House in Bethnal Green, where he became rector in 1895. In 1897, he was consecrated bishop of Stepney and canon of St. Paul's Cathedral. In 1901, Winnington-Ingram was appointed bishop of London, holding the see until his retirement in 1939. He became one of the foremost Christian leaders in Britain, and in 1915, was created K.C.V.O. He died in 1946 at Upton-on-Severn, Worcestershire.
