Biographical History
Frank Whitney Finger was born April 16, 1915 in Buffalo, New York, and died in 2003 from stroke complications.
Finger pursued his undergraduate (1936) and Master's (1937) degrees at Syracuse University under the mentorship of Floyd Allport. Finger then went on to Brown University to complete his PhD in 1940.
Finger's academic career began in 1942 with a position at the University of Virginia. In 1955 he became a full professor and remained there until his retirement in 1985. He also held international posts as visiting professor at England's Sussex University (1975-6) and New Zealand's University of Canterbury (1981).
Finger was involved in the American Psychological Association. He was a member of Divisions 1,2 and 3, and was president of each of them at different times. Finger served on a variety of APA Councils and Boards. He was a consultant to the National Science Foundation and National Institute of Mental Health and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The University of Virginia gives away a graduate teaching fellowship in honor of professor Finger.
