Biographical History

Walter A. Weber (1906-1979) was born on May 23, 1906, in Chicago, Illinois. As a young man he would go to local bars and sketch birds and mammals for sale. He graduated the University of Chicago in 1927, earning degrees in zoology and botany. He continued his studies at the Art Institute. From 1928-1931, he worked for the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago as a collector and artist. In 1935, he took a job as a wildlife technician with the National Park Service in Oklahoma and Texas. In 1941, he became an ornithologist at the United States National Museum. He did freelance work from 1944-1949. In 1949, he became a staff artist and naturalist for the National Geographic Society (NGS). He traveled most of the United States and also Latin America, Europe, and Africa. He stayed at NGS until his retirement in 1971. He died on January 10, 1979.
