Biographical History
Governor of and U.S. representative from Arkansas, public official of Tennessee, jurist, and army officer.
Archibald Yell was a soldier and congressman.
Second governor of Arkansas, Archibald Yell (1797-1847) was raised in North Carolina and later moved to Tennessee where he served under Andrew Jackson in various Indian campaigns.
In 1830 he moved to Arkansas to take charge of the Federal Land Office. Following two other political offices, Yell ran unopposed for the Governorship of Arkansas in 1840 and served one term. In 1845 he accepted the colonelcy of the 1st Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry during the Mexican War. Yell was killed in the Battle of Buena Vista, Feb. 22, 1847.
