Biographical History
Bernard Nietschmann (1941-2000) served as a professor in the Dept. of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1977 until 2000. Nietschmann was known for his groundbreaking field work with the Miskito of Nicaragua, as well as his negotiation on their behalf with the Sandanista government to protect Miskito land from government encroachment. He also headed the Maya Mapping Project, using cultural geography to help identify and defend the land rights of the Maya and other indigenous groups around the world. In addition, Nietschmann published extensive studies on sea turtles in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and the Torres Strait.
