Professor of English; author; book reviewer. Born Mar. 28, 1900, in Chicago. Graduated from University of Chicago, 1923, M.A. 1924. Ph. D., University of Washington (Seattle), 1932. Teaching: University of Chicago, 1923-1925 (assistant); University of Washington, Seattle, 1925-1943 (associate, assistant professor, associate professor); Illinois Institute of Technology, 1943-1947 (associate professor); Boston University, 1947-1965 (professor). Literary editor of Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 1935-1940. Featured reviewer for Chicago Sunday Tribune Magazine of Books, 1944-1963.

(Cont.) Editor, Boston University Studies in English, 1955-1958. Author of numerous books, including titles on Lillian Gish, Geraldine Farrar, Charles Dickens, George Bernard Shaw, Jenny Lind, Mark Twain, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, and Harriet Beecher Stowe.
