Haas was born on Jan. 20, 1916 in Santa Cruz, CA; BA, UC Berkeley, 1938; MA, Univ. of Chicago, 1939; Ed. D, Stanford Univ., 1945; postgraduate in art history, UCLA, 1965-68; became faculty member at UCLA in 1949; named director of arts and humanities extension in 1958; published books include A primer for the gradual understanding of Gertrude Stein (1971) and Muybridge : man in motion (c1976); also wrote a paper on William Chauncey Bartlett; Bartlett was born on Dec. 30, 1818 in Haddam, CT; attended Williams College, and in 1847, Ohio Univ.; admitted to Ohio bar and was law partner of Hiram Strong in Dayton, 1848-55; joined the staff of the Dayton gazette, 1855; became anti-slavery preacher in Indianapolis in 1857; moved to San Francisco in 1860; became itinerant preacher in the California gold mining towns; served as editor of the San Francisco bulletin in 1866, and took over from Bret Harte as the editor of the Overland monthly in 1871; served as a school superintendent and board member of Mills College; author of works on a variety of subjects, including A breeze from the woods (1880); he died on Dec. 7, 1907 in Oakland, CA.
Jeweler, Stockton, Calif. Emigrated from Wallduern, Baden to New York (1848). Went to California (1852) and opened jewelry store in Stockton (1859) that remained in business for 100 years. Haas family were related to Levi Strauss and are among owners of Levi's clothing manufacturers of San Francisco.
