Biographical History
Henry Francis Nachtrieb was a professor of zoology and animal biology at the University of Minnesota, and was an organizer and president of the University of Minnesota General Alumni Association.
Henry Nachtrieb was born near Galion, Ohio on May 11, 1857. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1882. He attended Johns Hopkins University graduate school from 1883-1885. In 1885, he returned to the University of Minnesota as an instructor in biology; in 1886 he became an assistant professor and in 1887 became professor and department head of the animal biology department, a position he held until his retirement in 1925. At the time of his retirement he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus of Animal Biology.
He was very committed to the University of Minnesota and was instrumental in forming the General Alumni Association. He was its first president and retained this position for 12 years (1904-1916). Professor Nachtrieb also served as the State Zoologist for the Geological and Natural History Survey of Minnesota.
He assisted in founding a local chapter of Psi Upsilon fraternity, was a member of Sigma Xi, American societies of Zoologists, Anatomists and Naturalists, the Association of American Museums and was a fellow if the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He died on July 17, 1942 in Berkeley, California.
