Biographical History
Thomas Nelson Page (1853-1922) was a lawyer, businessman, diplomat, and man of letters. He practiced law with his kinsman, Thomas Nelson Carter, as international business representative for Minnesota real estate and mining options, and was patron-adviser to Southern writers. After the death of his first wife, he shared his home in Richmond, Va., with his brother, Rosewell, also a widower. His second marriage was to Florence Lathrop Field of Chicago. Rosewell Page (1858-1939) grew up at "Oakland," the Nelson family plantation in Hanover County, Va. He was educated as a lawyer, and after the untimely death of his wife on their honeymoon, joined his brother in Richmond and practiced law. Also in the household was Thomas' sister-in-law, Ellen Bruce Baylor and her three children. Rosewell married his cousin, Ruth Nelson, in 1898, and returned to "Oakland" to live and commute to his office in Richmond. He served two terms in the Virginia House of Delegates, became Second Auditor, and ran for governor. He continued writing, and published a history of Civil War campaigns in verse form, a daily newpaper column, local histories, and a memoir of his brother.
