Biographical History
Sommer was born May 25, 1908 in Minneapolis. He grew up in Rush City, Minn., where he began his banking career at the Rush City State Bank. Soon afterward he moved to Minneapolis to work for the Midland National Bank. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, and later attended the Minnesota College of Law for two years and graduated from the Stonier School of Banking at Rutger's University. He moved to Owatonna, Minn. in 1955 to become president of Security State Bank & Trust Co. He was a state senator 1967-1970 and in 1971, just before his retirement from Northwest Bancorporation, he and his wife moved back to Minneapolis. He was on the Minneapolis Board of Park commissioners (1953-1955), member of the American Legion and many other community organizations, and elected president of the American Bankers Association in 1970.
