Biographical History
Union Army officer and bank teller, of Portland, Me.
John Mead Gould, of Portland, Me., was a banker.
Union Army officer and banker, of Portland, Me.; Civil War veteran, close associate of Edward Sylvester Morse, and member of Portland Society of Natural History. Gould served with the 1st Maine Infantry Regiment and its successors, the 10th and 29th Maine regiments, was the regiments' official historian, and was extensively involved in post-war reunions and veterans' issues.
Major with 29th Maine Infantry during the Civil War and author, of Portland, Me.
John Mead Gould was a Portland banker and Civil War veteran. He began writing diaries as a teenager and continued through his years of service with the Army. He used these diaries to publish The History of the First, Tenth, Twenty-ninth Regiments in 1871. Although Gould fought for the North, he was not without prejudice. He was once a member of the Know-Nothing party, which was responsible for attacks on Irish Catholics and other minorities. He was, however, a disciplined man. This is seen in his faithfulness to writing almost daily during his service and sending pages to Edward Morse for safekeeping. In this way, all of his writing was saved. He served with the three aforementioned regiments and was a major when the war was over. His diaries are full of meticulous detail about everything around him; they are considered an invaluable resource about the war. He included some maps and sketches of uniforms or places he camped.
