Biographical History
John Robert Williams was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1897. After service in World War I, he graduated from Dartmouth College with the Class of 1919. From 1920 to 1927, he was a graduate student in history at Harvard University. In 1926, he joined the history faculty of Dartmouth College where he was appointed an assistant professor in 1928 and professor in 1937. Professor Williams retired from active teaching in 1964. During his career, he was involved in research on the intellectual history of medieval France with a particular emphasis on the schools of Chartres, Laon, and Reims. He died in 1988.
