Biographical History
Landscape painter and portraitist. After serving in the Australian Imperial Force, 1943-47, Pugh studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School. The artist colony he set up at Dunmoochin legally became the Dunmoochin Artists Society in 1953, and he set up the Dunmoochin Foundation as a perpetual charitable trust in 1989. Pugh was noted for his portraits of politicians, artists, writers, academics and Labor figures, and was equally acclaimed for his pictures of the bush. His third Archibald Prize win in 1972 was with a portrait of Gough Whitlam.
