Biographical History

Hester Lynch Thrale (born Hester Lynch Salusbury and after her second marriage, Hester Lynch Piozzi ) was a British diarist, author, and patron of the arts. Her diaries and correspondence are an important source of information about Samuel Johnson and eighteenth-century life.

Hester Lynch Piozzi and her first husband, Henry Thrale, a wealthy brewer, were English patrons of the arts. Numerous 18th-century English celebrities regularly visited their estate, including Joshua Reynolds, Edmund Burke, David Garrick, Oliver Goldsmith, Sir Robert Chambers, Charles and Fanny Burney, and James Boswell. Dr. Sameul Johnson had his own rooms in the house and was treated as a permanent member of the family. After Thrale's death, Mrs. Thrale married Gabriel Piozzi, an Italian music master, in 1784.
