Daniel James, Jr. (b. 1920, Pensacola, Fla.-d. Feb. 25, 1978), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from Tuskegee Institute in 1942, received his commission in 1943, and then completed fighter pilot training. In 1950 he flew 101 combat missions in Korea. During the 1950s, he served as an all-weather jet fighter pilot with the 58th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (FIS), and as commander of the 437th and 60th FIS. Following assignments in England with the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing and 92nd Tactical Fighter Squadron, General James flew 78 combat missions into North Vietnam. Back in the U.S., he served as deputy assistant secretary of defense (public affairs); vice commander, Military Airlift Command; commander in chief of NORAD/ADCOM; and as special assistant to the chief of staff, U.S. Air Force. He retired in 1978.
