Biographical History
Claudius Henry Mastin received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1849 and practiced medicine in Mobile, Alabama. During the Civil War he became medical director of the army of the Mississippi. He invented several surgical instruments and contributed largely to medical journals, especially on genito-urinary surgery. He was the founder of the Congress of American Physicians and Surgeons, and one of the organizers of the American Surgical Association.
