Dr. J. Hall Pleasants (1873-1957), an authority on early Maryland painters and their works, first became associated with the Frick Art Reference Library in 1924. Dr. Pleasants' involvement in organizing and participating in Frick Art Reference Library photographing expeditions in Maryland led to a mutual exchange of research and photographs with the Library that lasted 33 years. Dr. Pleasants' other areas of research included genealogy, history, and Maryland silver.
