Biographical History

Wilford Heath Hudson was born on September 19, 1818, in Corydove, Indiana. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Illinois in the early 1840s and joined the Mormon Battalion (Private 47, Company A) in 1846, marching with them to California. After his discharge in California in 1847, he worked for a time near Sutter's Fort, and was among the first to prospect for gold in the area. He had some success in prospecting near the fort and on Mormon Island, but returned to his family in Council Bluffs, Utah, in 1848. He later worked as a clerk for the Church in Grantsville, Utah, and served as a captain in the militia during the Utah War. He died in Grantsville in 1905. Helen G. Howard is his great-great-granddaughter.
