Early family of Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois.
Ebenezer Rand, a shoemaker and farmer, emigrated to Illinois from Massachusetts with his first wife Hannah Calley in 1830. Between his marriage to Hannah and subsequent marriages to Elizabeth Calley and Joanna C. Lawton, the Rand family grew to 8 children who survived infancy. Son William Lucius Rand served in the 118th Illinois Infantry, Company B, during the Civil War. He later operated a grocery business in Carthage with one of his brothers. He and his wife Savannah Murphy Rand were the parents of 2 daughters and a son, William Logan Rand. William Logan served in World War I as a chemist with the Chemical Service Section in Edgewood, Maryland. He later moved to California.
