Biographical History

John G. Pratt was born September 9, 1814 at Hingham, Massachusetts. He studied at the Wakefield Academy, Reading, Massachusetts, and at Andover Seminary where he graduated in 1836. Besides his regular studies, he spent time at the University Press, Cambridge, where he learned the printing trade. At Andover he was licensed to preach and after graduation was employed by the Baptist Missionary Society for work in the Indian Country, first as a printer and later as a missionary. John married Olivia Evans on March 28, 1837 in Reading and they moved from Boston to the Shawnee Baptist Mission near present Merriam, Kansas. John replaced Jotham Meeker as printer.
