Biographical History

Dr. Mark Swerdlow (1918-2003) conducted research on the problems of pain control and introduced new anesthetic nerve block techniques for pain treatment as a consultant anesthetist at Salford Royal Hospital. He established one of the first pain relief clinics (North West Regional Pain Centre) in Great Britain in 1959 and was its director for 21 years. Swerdlow founded the Intractable Pain Society of Great Britain and Ireland in 1967 and was a founding member of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Following his retirement in 1980, Swerdlow consulted for the World Health Organization (WHO) and launched its cancer pain relief programme with a meeting in Milan in 1981 and a publication in 1986.
