Biographical History

Dr. James William Smith and his wife, Melicent Knapp, came to Hawaii on the brig "Sarah Abigail" in 1842 with the Tenth Missionary Company. They were stationed at Koloa, Kauai; Dr. Smith was the only physician on the island. In 1854 he was ordained to the ministry and became pastor of three Evangelical churches. Dr. Smith died at Koloa in 1887.
