Biographical History
Augustin Hamelin, Jr., also known as Kanapima, was one of three Ottawa children selected in 1825 to attend Catholic school in Cincinnati, Ohio. After continuing his studies at Urban College in Rome, Italy, Hamelin returned in 1835 to teach and to negotiate with the U.S. government to prevent the removal of the Ottawas across the Mississippi. At that time the Ottawas and Ojibwas appointed Hamelin head chief for the tribes of the lower Michigan peninsula, the straits of Mackinac, and the Manistique River.
