Biographical History
Biographical note: Physician, John Handy was born in 1844 in New Jersey. With his parents, he went to California in 1853, later was appointed U.S. Army surgeon and assigned to Fort Apache, Arizona in 1867. In 1869, Handy left the military and came to Tucson to establish a medical practice. He was active in the community and was the first Chancellor of the University of Arizona, served for many years as both City Physician and Pima County Physician and Health Office, and served on the Pima County Board of Supervisors for two years. He was killed in 1891.
Physician; arrived in Arizona in 1866 and was stationed at Forts Apache, Thomas and Grant as an Army Surgeon. As a civilian he was Pima County Physician and Health Officer, and division surgeon of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Handy was shot by lawyer Francis J. Heney in 1891.
