Biographical History
Rev. George Thomas Chapman (1851-1860), the son of Thomas and Charlotte (Carnzu) Chapman, was a lawyer, clergyman, and author. He was born at Pilton, Devonshire, England and emigrated to the United States in 1795. He married, on 19 May 1811, Alice Buck ( - ), of Bucksport, Me. For the period 1846 to 1852, Chapman was rector of St. Stephen's Church, Pittsfield, Mass. After resigning, he preached chiefly at St. Paul's Church, Newburyport, Mass., but also at various other churches. In 1855, he moved to New Jersey to help establish Grace Church at Orange, N.J. While there he also preached at St. John's Church, Elizabeth, N.J., St. John's Church, Perth Amboy, N.J., and St. Saviour's Church, Maspeth, N.Y. In 1856, he moved to Lee, Mass., and helped establish St. George's Church. Chapman eventually retired from preaching in 1859, and moved to Newburyport, Mass., though he did preach again at St. James' Church, Amesbury, Mass., in December 1859 and January 1860. Chapman died on 18 October 1872 at Newburyport.
