Biographical History

The Melanesian Institute (MI) was established in 1971 as an ecumenical research and teaching institute, designed to help member churches speak more clearly to the needs of the people in Melanesia. This is accomplished through the study of Melanesian cultural traditions, the dissemination of research materials at the Institute's annual cultural orientation course, workshops and seminars and through its publications.

From the description of M.I.-X.I.M. Orientation course, Alexishafen, papers, 1972 June-July [microform]. [1972] (Libraries Australia). WorldCat record id: 654583371

The Melanesian Institute was founded in 1968 by the Association of Clerical Religious Superiors of the Catholic church in response to the need for new missionaries to have a greater knowledge and understanding of the people, culture and traditions of Melanesia. The first orientation course was held in 1969. Since 1971, the Anglican, Lutheran and United Churches have joined in the various courses and publications of the Institute.
