Biographical History
Edward Matthew Curran was born on May 10, 1903 in Bangor, Maine. He received an A.B. from the University of Maine in 1928, and an LL.B. from the Catholic University of America Law School. He married Katherine C. Hand on June 6, 1934 (died March 1960), and married Margaret V. Carr on December 30, 1963. He was an attorney in a private practice, 1929 to 1934, and an instructor at the Catholic University of America Law School, 1930 to 1935. He then served as assistant corporation counsel in the District of Columbia, 1934 to 1936, and Judge for the District of Columbia Police Court, 1936 to 1940. He served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, 1940 to 1946, and was a professor of law at Georgetown University Law School, 1943 to 1946. On October 16, 1946, Curran received a recess appointment from President Harry S. Truman, to a seat vacated by Daniel W. O'Donoghue in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He was nominated on January 8, 1947; confirmed by the Senate on February 3, 1947; and received his commission on February 5, 1947. He served as chief judge, 1966 to 1971. He assumed senior status on April 2, 1971, and continued to serve as a senior U.S. district judge up until his death, on January 10, 1988.
