Biographical History
Sukumar Sen was born on 16 January 1900 and died on 3 March 1992. He was one of the most eminent Bengali scholars of the twentieth century. A former student of linguistics, he spent most of his professional life in the Linguistics Department of Kolkata University, researching widely in medieval and later Bengali literature. His publications include works on Verdic, Sanskrit and Bengali linguistics; he has also written a multi-volume history of Bengali literature. Sen also had other antiquarian and bibliographic interests, and collected an enormous personal library. A section of this - 'popular market' Bengali books - was digitised as part of the EAP 127 project.
