Currie was born in Scotland in 1830 and arrived in Melbourne in 1853. In 1862 he bought four ships, and in 1872 formed Archibald Currie & Co. and began regular trade with India. In 1883 Currie visited Britain, returning in 1885 on the Bucephalus with which he opened a direct steam service to India. Other steam ships were soon added to the line. He was founder of the Australian Lloyds and the Australian Mercantile Insurance Co. He gave valuable service to the Pilot Board and the Marine Board. In 1913 he sold his ships to the British India Steam Navigation Co. and retired. He died in 1914 in St. Kilda, Vic.
