Biographical History
Josephine Harreld Love, born December 11, 1914 in Atlanta of mixed black, white and Native American parentage, studied and was active in the fine arts from an early age. She received a B.A. in English from Spelman College, a diploma in piano from Juilliard School of Music, and a M.A. in musicology from Radcliffe College. She also studied sculpture and composition and did postgraduate work in piano and musicology. A cofounder of Your Heritage House in the Detroit Cultural Center, an art museum and art school for children, Ms. Love has held teaching positions at several colleges, including the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from 1987 to the present.
Harreld's mother, Mrs. Kemper Harreld, was active in African American women's organizations in Georgia.
