Biographical History
Philadelphia Committee of the organization known in German as Hilfswerk für die deutschen Kinder in den vom Deutschen Reich und Österreich abgetrennten Provinzen; by 1928 the Committee used the English form of the name. During its existence from 1925 to 1928 the Committee was led by Fritz O. Evers, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. The parent group was a German-American relief effort working in cooperation with the German organization Verein für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA), or Society for the Germans in Foereign Countries, with the common aim to provide material aid and cultural support to German populatons now part of other nations as a result of the Treaties of Versailles and of St. Germain after World War I. Pastor Evers and other members of the Committee were also members of the German Society of Pennsylvania, which appears to have served as a headquarters. The Committee seems to have ceased activities in 1928 around the time that Pastor Evers departed Philadelphia to assume a position in Baltimore, Md.
