Technician Fourth Grade Day displayed courage, initiative, and resourcefulness in obtaining photographic coverage of combat activities. His services reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States. Entered military service from California." Day was also awarded the Za Zasluhy, a non-combat medal for military merit from Czechoslovakia. Day covered the invasion of Normandy. Day and William Saroyan were transported to Europe in World War II on the same ship.
