Biographical History
Barnard College was given its first provisional charter by the Regents of the State of New York on Aug. 8, 1889.
Junior Month was a summer project in sociological theory and practice founded in 1917 and supervised by the Charity Organization Society of New York City. In a one month period juniors from twelve eastern colleges attended lectures and performed case work in New York City, visiting slum neighborhoods, factories, courts and other locations. Colleges participating were: Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Connecticut College, Elmira, Goucher, Mt. Holyoke, Radcliffe, Smith, Swarthmore, Vassar, Wells and Wellesley. Barnard first participated in the program in 1921. Barnard suspended its participation during the 1930's.
Barnard College, a undergraduate college for women, opened in 1889. It was the custom of students to keep scrapbooks of their activities and experiences during their attendance at the school. Many of these were later donated to Barnard's archives and provide an intimate, personal views of undergraduate life over the years.
The "Eleusinian Mysteries" was the initiation ritual for incoming first year students at Barnard from 1890 until the late 1920's. At first students, dressed in flowing robes, gathered in a dignified procession and swore an oath of loyalty to the College in Greek. The "Mysteries Book" contained the accumulated wit and wisdom regarding professor's foibles and other collegiate topics. Each class would add to the book and present it to the incoming class at the ritual. Later, activities became more raucous. As the school became larger, the ceremony was discontinued.
