Biographical History
Robert Jenkins was a Chester County, Pa. ironmaster.
Robert Jenkins (1767-1848) was the owner of Windsor Forge in Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, PA from 1799-1848. The forge, originally known as Windsor Iron-Works, was started by Robert's grandfather, John Jenkins, in the early 1700s. The forge was sold to William Branson in 1742, but was bought back by Robert's father, David Jenkins, in 1773. After the death of his father, Robert Jenkins operated the forge until his own death in 1848, at which time his son, David, took over the business. The forge was abandoned two years later after the death of David because of competition and scarcity of wood to fuel the furnaces.
Robert Jenkins married Catherine Carmichael and had two sons and six daughters. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature and from 1807-1811 he served as a member of the U.S. Congress.
